A 20-something man working for Christine Quinn\u2019s campaign rang my apartment doorbell Tuesday afternoon and asked if I had a few minutes to discuss the fall mayoral election. He handed me a flyer containing the Quinn campaign\u2019s talking points.<\/p>\n
I laughed a bit and told him I was a deBlasio supporter.<\/p>\n
His response was interesting I thought. He asked me if I had a second choice. I told him I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
I expected a sales pitch – or formulaic effort to talk me off Quinn\u2019s rival. Instead the young man said thanks and wished me a good day. I was ready to tell him the specific reason why I couldn\u2019t vote for the candidate he was working for but he didn\u2019t bother asking. He scribbled something on the paper attached to his clipboard and moved on.<\/p>\n
It was a very cordial exchange.<\/p>\n
As I closed the door, I felt a bit of regret that I didn\u2019t engage the fellow a bit more. It\u2019s not every day somebody gets into the building, comes to my apartment and asks me if I want to talk local politics. I\u2019m impressed that the Quinn campaign has the resources and perhaps research to send a real, live human being to my door seeking my vote. I\u2019m always appreciative of anybody who ventures into unknown territory on behalf of a candidate seeking public office. It\u2019s how politics ought to work.<\/p>\n
I can\u2019t vote for Quinn because of the self-enriching, one-time term limit extension deal she cut with Mayor Mike. But I commend the young man from the Quinn campaign for participating in a process that includes visits to tiny studio apartments in the densely-populated heart of Queens.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
