{"id":368,"date":"2012-06-07T17:36:16","date_gmt":"2012-06-07T21:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?p=368"},"modified":"2012-06-09T07:20:56","modified_gmt":"2012-06-09T11:20:56","slug":"368","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?p=368","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?attachment_id=367\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-367\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-367\" title=\"Cassie Ramone and Brian Schleyer - The Babies - Glasslands - 6-6-12\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0909-e1339104294552.jpg?resize=584%2C508&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"508\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My favorite rock and roll\u00a0band played on home turf Wednesday and delivered a fantastic 40-minute set as the evening\u2019s headliner at Glasslands in Williamsburg.<\/p>\n<p>The Babies are sitting on lots of new songs and have been rolling them out steadily during pretty regular appearances at local venues.<\/p>\n<p>With an attentive, decent-sized number of people on hand, the understated front man Kevin Morby greeted the crowd after a couple of numbers with a question he often asks early in a Babies set.\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cHow\u2019s it sound?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?attachment_id=366\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-366\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-366\" title=\"Kevin Morby - The Babies - Glasslands - 6-6-12\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/IMG_0896-e1339104178927.jpg?resize=584%2C423&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"423\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It sounded great of course,\u00a0although Morby was asking more specifically about the technical aspects of the what was being controlled by the sound board.\u00a0 He received a half dozen different answers.\u00a0 Some were contradictory.\u00a0 Morby smiled.<\/p>\n<p>On the great yet-to-be-released tune \u201cGet Lost,\u201d Morby uncorks a riveting vocal sequence that builds to a dramatic high-pitched yelp.\u00a0 It knocks my socks off every time I hear it and is reminiscent of early rollicking Dylan.\u00a0 With his electric strapped high, Morby half-twirls out of playing mode and stares sternly into the audience:\u00a0 <strong><em>\u201cWhy are you walking so slow?\u00a0 Why do you always walk so slow?\u00a0 I gotta go\u2026somewhere soooon.\u00a0 And I hope\u2026I\u2019ll be going there with youuuu.\u00a0 Oooh-oooh-oooh-oooh-oooh-oooh-oooh-oooh-oooh.\u00a0 O\u2019oeyw!&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><\/strong> (intense squeal).<\/p>\n<p>The Brooklyn trio Nude Beach preceded The Babies and also played about 40 minutes.\u00a0 These young guys are quickly building a following.\u00a0 You hear Petty, Springsteen, and a lot of Old Pike influence when they play their fun ones.\u00a0 Their signature tune \u201cWalkin\u2019 Down My Street\u201d has remarkable similarity to Sherry Darling.<\/p>\n<p>Nude Beach drummer Ryan Naideau adds backing vocals in spots and is fun to watch.\u00a0 He\u2019s a big guy with a beard and he really goes after his kit.<\/p>\n<p>I walked into Glasslands at about 10:15 PM.\u00a0 Television\u2019s Marquee Moon was spinning between sets.<\/p>\n<p>Refrigerated 12-oz. Bud cans were $4 each.\u00a0 The lone bartender handled between-set rushes on the elevated serving platform with speed and a smile.<\/p>\n<p>I scribbled down scheduled stop times for the Bedford bus before I left for the show and noticed one was coming about five minutes after The Babies wrapped up at about ten minutes after midnight.\u00a0 I was anything but a slow walker to reach Bedford and sure enough, the bus arrived just as I reached the stop.\u00a0 The wait for a local train at desolate Queens Plaza was a solid fifteen minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The next fun event on this ten-day staycation comes Saturday at beautiful Belmont Park where I\u2019ll Have Another will attempt to win horse racing\u2019s elusive triple crown.\u00a0 I\u2019ll join the gang in section 3T.<\/p>\n<p>Not since Affirmed in 1978 has a horse won the crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont). In the 34 years subsequent, 11 horses have won the first two legs of the crown only to fail in the Belmont.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll Have Another faces the same problem that prompted the other 11 to come up short.\u00a0 Having run two taxing races in five weeks, it\u2019s difficult for the fragile thoroughbred to find stamina to run a mile and a half fast enough to defeat fresher competitors who sat out earlier crown races.\u00a0 Both Union Rags and Dullahan sat out the Preakness and are considered the two top threats to I\u2019ll Have Another\u2019s crown bid.<\/p>\n<p>The extreme difficulty of the feat makes I\u2019ll Have Another\u2019s effort to attain it an exciting prospect.\u00a0 A crowd of 100-thousand is possible at the 107-year-old race track on the border of Queens and Long Island.<\/p>\n<p>The equine nasal strip positioned on I\u2019ll Have Another\u2019s snout (above his nostrils) for the Preakness and Derby will not be allowed for his Belmont run.\u00a0 The New York Racing Association forbids the breathing aid on race entrants and you wonder if Another\u2019s nasal passages will feel the difference.\u00a0 If ever there was a horse race where maximum air flow into the lungs is helpful, it\u2019s the mile and a half distance of the Belmont Stakes.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll root for history but my betting slips will be driven by the belief that I\u2019ll Have Another will tire well before the finish line.<\/p>\n<p>Your TSR Belmont trifecta looks like this:<\/p>\n<p>Dullahan<\/p>\n<p>Street Life<\/p>\n<p>Union Rags<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My favorite rock and roll\u00a0band played on home turf Wednesday and delivered a fantastic 40-minute set as the evening\u2019s headliner at Glasslands in Williamsburg.
