{"id":272,"date":"2012-04-18T17:54:42","date_gmt":"2012-04-18T21:54:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?p=272"},"modified":"2012-04-18T17:58:20","modified_gmt":"2012-04-18T21:58:20","slug":"272","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?p=272","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?attachment_id=271\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-271\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-271\" title=\"Plants and Animals - Littlefield - 4-17-12\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/IMG_0691-e1334785980927.jpg?resize=584%2C446&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"446\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With a few days left to go on this first week of 2012 vacation, I went down to Brooklyn Tuesday night to see the great Montreal band Plants and Animals.<\/p>\n<p>Touring in support of an excellent new record \u201cThe End of That,\u201c Plants and Animals hit the stage at Littlefield at 10:30 PM on the dot.\u00a0 The band left sweaty from a vigorous physical effort a full 90 minutes later.\u00a0 The crowd numbered no more than 50.<\/p>\n<p>The Pitchfork reviewer Ian Cohen trashed End of That in a four paragraph rip job posted six weeks ago to coincide with the release.\u00a0 Cohen mocked the record\u2019s song lyrics which he deemed \u201ccringeworthy.\u201d He equated the record to a \u201cMatthew McConaughy character come to life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While I don\u2019t think End of That is as strong as P &amp; A\u2019s previous record La La Land, I strongly disagree with Cohen\u2019s evaluation that the words are somehow unsophisticated or unlikely statements on life episodes.<\/p>\n<p>The set presented Tuesday night covered the new record including a crisp and rousing version of the song <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/EhJvSw99G1E?hd=1\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cLightshow.\u201d\u00a0 <\/a>The highlight came when frontman Warren Spicer stepped behind an electric piano and led the band into \u201cGame Shows,\u201d my favorite all-time song from these guys.\u00a0 A Nic Basque jam at the end of Game Shows blends with Spicer piano pops to sound like old Beatles.<\/p>\n<p>Littlefield was a nice space to see a show.\u00a0 The sound was good and it\u2019s easily accessible to the R train stop at Union.\u00a0 The bathrooms were nice and beers were cheap.\u00a0 You just wonder if this place has staying power given the wildly competitive terrain it\u2019s operating on.\u00a0 Another relatively new and similar-sized venue called The Rock Shop is a couple blocks away.\u00a0 The number of small music venues in Brooklyn alone is enough to make your head spin.\u00a0 Just a few weeks ago, the great club Southpaw was forced to call it quits.<\/p>\n<p>I met up with Whitey before the show at Mission Delores for a few cold ones.\u00a0 This place has a great beer selection and puts out bowls of crinkle-cut pickles.\u00a0 The bar welcomes both dogs and kids and there were a few of each on hand during our stay there.<\/p>\n<p>We had dinner across the street from the bar at Oaxaca &#8211; Revolucion de Taco.\u00a0 The unique thing here is its use of pickled onions rather than fresh, crunchy ones.<\/p>\n<p>Plants and Animals is here again tonight but switches to the Manhattan venue Mercury Lounge.\u00a0 I\u2019m opting to stay home and watch game four of the Rangers\/Sens playoff series.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With a few days left to go on this first week of 2012 vacation, I went down to Brooklyn Tuesday night to see the great Montreal band Plants and Animals.
