{"id":256,"date":"2012-04-13T11:23:08","date_gmt":"2012-04-13T15:23:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?p=256"},"modified":"2012-04-13T11:27:16","modified_gmt":"2012-04-13T15:27:16","slug":"256","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?p=256","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?attachment_id=253\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-253\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-253\" title=\"Golden Gate Fields - 4-12-12\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/DSC02664-e1334329943564.jpg?resize=584%2C391&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"391\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The seven-race Thursday card at Golden Gate Fields wasn&#8217;t all that interesting from a gambling standpoint but boy am I glad I went out there to see it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The facility is way better than it looks on TV.\u00a0 On the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, Golden Gate is a big, old racing plant with great character and beauty.\u00a0 Built in 1941, the track experienced a few decades of success during a period when people actually went to go see horse races.\u00a0 That time is gone, of course.\u00a0 And soon this place will probably be gone too.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?attachment_id=248\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-248\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-248\" title=\"Golden Gate Fields - 4-12-12\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/DSC02655-e1334328785719.jpg?resize=584%2C391&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"391\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Unlike many similar-sized thoroughbred race tracks facing extinction however, Golden Gate seems to be at least making an effort to retain the few patrons bothering to show up.\u00a0 The place was clean and orderly.\u00a0 Staffers were friendly and helpful.\u00a0 Things worked.\u00a0 Drinks were served.\u00a0 Somewhat creative food was prepared.\u00a0 The paddock was well kept and accessible.\u00a0 There was no discernible surface bias. Track announcer Michael Wrona may be the best of any at his craft.\u00a0 I was impressed with everything about Golden Gate Fields.\u00a0 Except for the racing.\u00a0 Short fields of low-priced claimers made it a yawn to handicap.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?attachment_id=255\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-255\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-255\" title=\"Awesome Gem - 4-12-12\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/DSC02709-e1334330266904.jpg?resize=584%2C496&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"496\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The one exception was a specially created race for an old horse based in Southern California named Awesome Gem (pictured above).\u00a0 Since Gem&#8217;s connections have made it known they&#8217;d like to run in the April 28th San Francisco Mile at Golden Gate, the track&#8217;s racing secretary constructed a race to serve as a prep for Gem over the local surface.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?attachment_id=250\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-250\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-250\" title=\"Russell Baze - 4-12-12\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/DSC02685-e1334328858207.jpg?resize=584%2C391&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"391\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Consistent rain over the last week or so forced the race&#8217;s removal from the grass but the synthetic main track surface is considered turf-like in its qualities which left Gem and the balance of his rivals in this field out of the scratch column.\u00a0 To make it all more intriguing, Awesome Gem was ridden by the legendary 53-year-jockey Russell Baze (pictured above).
