{"id":245,"date":"2012-04-12T12:39:09","date_gmt":"2012-04-12T16:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?p=245"},"modified":"2012-04-12T12:39:10","modified_gmt":"2012-04-12T16:39:10","slug":"245","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?p=245","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?attachment_id=242\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-242\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-242\" title=\"Left field bleachers - Oakland Coliseum - 4-11-12\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/DSC02497-e1334248280342.jpg?resize=584%2C500&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"500\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We went back to the ballpark Wednesday afternoon for the series finale of A&#8217;s\/Royals.\u00a0 The Coliseum day-of-game window sells $2 tickets on Wednesdays.\u00a0 The assigned location of those seats is way out by the foul poles and in the upper outfield deck.\u00a0 Not bad for two bucks.\u00a0 My Dad and I roved around a bit, sitting an inning here, a couple innings there.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The sun came out in spots and the predicted rain never panned out.\u00a0 A chilly wind whipped up late but overall, it was a nice day for baseball by the Bay.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?attachment_id=243\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-243\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-243\" title=\"Jonathan Broxton - 4-11-12\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/DSC02580-e1334248435467.jpg?resize=584%2C679&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"679\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This contest had a wild ending.\u00a0 You could see it coming.\u00a0 After scoring a go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning, the Royals sent out their 300 pound (plus) closer Jonathan Broxton.\u00a0 The big guy had been up and down in the bullpen at least four times.\u00a0 Jacket on.\u00a0 Jacket off.\u00a0 For over an hour during the four-hour and ten-minute game, Broxton got hot &#8211; and then he sat down in the teeth of cold Oakland gusts.\u00a0 He threw a bunch of warm-up pitches in the bullpen but never looked comfortable.\u00a0 The threat of live game line-drives down the first base stripe can create an uneasy feeling for a guy in the bullpen here.\u00a0 His back is to the action.\u00a0 Some clubs install a lookout guy with a glove to guard the pitcher.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anyway.\u00a0 Broxton waddled out to the mound in the bottom of the 12th and set down the first A&#8217;s batter with his mid-90&#8217;s heat.\u00a0 Young Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar then botched an easy Seth Smith grounder and it all went downhill for Broxton from there.\u00a0 He walked the next two batters.\u00a0 It was bases jammed for Coco.\u00a0 Crisp hit a weak grounder to second, which plated the tying run.\u00a0 That left men on second and third for new A\u2019s slugger Yoenis Cespedes.\u00a0 I thought Broxton would intentionally walk the Cuban defector.\u00a0 Instead, he plunked him.\u00a0 Same difference.\u00a0 So, in stepped Gomes.\u00a0 The first pitch from Broxton was up and in on the bulky left elbow pad of Gomes and the game was over.\u00a0 Because of the Escobar error, none of the runs were earned.\u00a0 But this was a big meltdown by the big Royals closer.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Using data from Baseball Reference, the Yahoo baseball writer Kevin Kaduk reported that this was the first time back-to-back plunks ended a game since 1966.<\/p>\n<p>Broxton&#8217;s size is such now that it may no longer work to his advantage.\u00a0 It may be just a matter of time before Greg Holland supplants Broxton as the Royals ninth-inning guy.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I kinda thought Broxton would end up as the Met closer when he lingered on the free agent market last winter.\u00a0 Now I guess I know why he got just the one-year deal for four mil from the Royals.<\/p>\n<p>Attendance was announced at 12390.\u00a0 It was a spirited crowd despite its size.\u00a0 Fans are allowed to blow horns and bang on drums.\u00a0 The counterculture that you see outside the ballpark in these parts very much drifts into its sporting venues.\u00a0 Especially for baseball at the Coliseum, where cost doesn&#8217;t necessarily exclude the 99-percent like it may across the Bay.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?attachment_id=244\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-244\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-244\" title=\"Yoenis Cespedes - 4-11-12\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/DSC02599-e1334248390498.jpg?resize=584%2C632&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"632\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All eyes in Oakland this season are on Yoenis Cespedes, the 26-year-old outfielder from Cuba.\u00a0 Everyone in baseball was surprised that it was Oakland who landed the 5-10, 210 pound slugger after he defected to the D-R a year ago.\u00a0 The A&#8217;s offered 4 years, $36 mil and that was enough to get a guy with massive power and skill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When you look at how Cespedes is built physically, it&#8217;s impossible not to wonder whether performance enhancers were part of the equation as he matured as a player in Cuba.\u00a0 He&#8217;ll have to pass MLB drug tests here and I&#8217;d think it&#8217;s possible Mr. Moneyball may have at least explored the matter during the recruitment process.<\/p>\n<p>As Cespedes settles in as a big league player, he\u2019ll likely be asked to avoid the temptation of swinging at bad pitches.\u00a0 During the two games we saw him, Cespedes waved at balls way out of the zone.\u00a0 His swing is really sweet though.\u00a0 Long and fluid backed by a Sosa-in-his-prime-like frame, Cespedes has been putting on shows during batting practice.\u00a0 If only the A&#8217;s had someone to protect him in the lineup.\u00a0 With a guy like Gomes batting behind him, Cespedes will not see much in the way of meaty offerings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the game, we hit Shan Dong on 10th Street in downtown Oakland.\u00a0 The Mandarin restaurant&#8217;s &#8220;Special Shan Dong Dumplings&#8221;
