{"id":123,"date":"2012-02-09T14:10:52","date_gmt":"2012-02-09T19:10:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?p=123"},"modified":"2012-02-09T14:35:06","modified_gmt":"2012-02-09T19:35:06","slug":"123","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?p=123","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?attachment_id=120\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-120\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-120\" title=\"Jeff the Brotherhood - DBA - 2-8-12\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Jeff-the-Brotherhood-DBA-2-8-12-e1328814098628.jpg?resize=584%2C438&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The two brothers from Nashville who comprise the great band JEFF the Brotherhood stopped in Brooklyn Wednesday night for a sold out show at the small, anything-goes venue Death By Audio.<\/p>\n<p>Jake (pictured above right) and Jamin Orrall (above left) are known collectively by their fans as \u201cJEFF.\u201d\u00a0 They\u2019re currently on the tail-end of a tour as openers for another two piece &#8211; The Kills.<\/p>\n<p>With a few off days from the Kills itinerary, JEFF booked shows in the New York-area for Wednesday and Thursday nights.\u00a0 They had done 18 performances in 18 cities the past 19 days coming into this gig.\u00a0 The previous night was a show in Toronto which meant JEFF had a 6:30 AM wake up call for Wednesday\u2019s 500-mile drive in a short bus.<\/p>\n<p>The Orrall brothers have recorded songs under the JEFF name since 2001.\u00a0 It\u2019s only been in the last year or two that their tireless live show efforts have started to pay off.<\/p>\n<p>JEFF followers are multiplying in big numbers since last year\u2019s release of the full-length \u201cWe Are The Champions.\u201d\u00a0 If you didn\u2019t know the back story, that record would lead you to believe there is more than two guys in the band.\u00a0 Like the White Stripes, there\u2019s a depth of sound to JEFF\u2019s music that defies the minimal manpower that makes it.\u00a0 There are just three strings on Jake\u2019s guitar and Jamin\u2019s drum kit is pretty basic.\u00a0 The effects and sound equipment used by Jake appears to be of a premium quality.\u00a0 Both Jake and Jamin are skilled musicians and both appeared to be having great fun Wednesday night.\u00a0 The two brothers smiled at each other repeatedly.\u00a0 Their father is Robert Ellis Orrall, a prominent Nashville songwriter who has helped produce JEFF records.\u00a0 The three together own and have built the independent Infinity Cat record label.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/?attachment_id=122\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-122\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-122\" title=\"JEFF the Brotherhood - Death By Audio - 2-8-12 \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thesauerbrunreport.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_0250-e1328814332231.jpg?resize=584%2C380&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"380\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Early in Wednesday\u2019s 85-minute set, Jamin broke a snare drum.\u00a0 A brief delay ensued before a member of the Brooklyn band Hunters brought up a loaner.\u00a0 The crowd was stuffed in tightly.\u00a0 The mosh was near non-stop.\u00a0 The crowd went wild when JEFF played \u201cCool Out.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Bodies surfed.\u00a0 Jake went for an in-song ride late in the set and played guitar all the way.<\/p>\n<p>JEFF labelmate Uncle Bad Touch was supposed to open this show but Jake said Touch \u201cgot stopped at the Canadian border\u201d and was unable to continue.\u00a0 Perhaps it was the band\u2019s ill-conceived name that raised a red flag.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d been planning on going to this show for a couple weeks.\u00a0 I got a ticket for $12 when they went on sale.\u00a0 A few nights ago, I was reading the new issue of Magnet magazine.\u00a0 In a column devoted to spotlighting negative trends in music, the Memphis-based writer Andrew Earles took a pot-shot at JEFF.<\/p>\n<p>Fair enough.\u00a0 That\u2019s what the guy does.\u00a0 But all the Orrall brothers are doing is experiencing a bit of a breakthrough after logging hundreds of small shows across a wide swath.\u00a0 These are two\u00a0witty young men\u00a0making a unique brand of loud, sing-along-type rock and roll that is beginning to reach a broader audience.<\/p>\n<p>The duo\u2019s next record will have major label support.\u00a0 Published interviews with Jake leave open the prospect of adding members to the band.\u00a0 I\u2019m rooting for them.\u00a0 The fun everybody was having in the audience clinches my seal of approval for JEFF the Brotherhood.\u00a0 It was a seriously fun show.\u00a0 People were walking out happy as can be.<\/p>\n<p>This was my first visit to Death By Audio.\u00a0 PBR cans were $3.\u00a0 It was a bit of a chore to reach the one and only bar in the rear of the single level space.\u00a0 A bottleneck forms at the narrow passageway connecting the main space to the back room where anything goes.\u00a0 I\u2019d estimate the crowd\u00a0at about 200.<\/p>\n<p>Before the show, I stopped in Trash Bar on Grand for the $5 beer and a shot special.\u00a0 It was right on the way.<\/p>\n<p>I rode a late-night (1:37 AM) B62 bus up to Queens Plaza and caught a connecting 7 train home to end the evening.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The two brothers from Nashville who comprise the great band JEFF the Brotherhood stopped in Brooklyn Wednesday night for a sold out show at the small, anything-goes venue Death By Audio.
