It’s a demotion to Triple-A.

After 27 seasons on the city’s best radio station for sports talk (WFAN-AM), Mets games are now carried on WOR-AM.

The FAN dropped the Mets to forge a new relationship with the Yankees. It was a logical ratings-based decision by WFAN.

The Mets should have responded to the divorce by cutting a deal with the up-and-coming local FM sports talker owned and operated by ESPN Radio. Instead the Wilpon family went to WOR which carries a dry, tasteless menu of conservative talk junk.

During Monday’s season opener, promos for Rush Limbaugh’s radio show littered the breaks. I’d imagine Howie cringed at some of what he heard on his headset between innings. New pre and post-game host Seth Everett is no Eddie Coleman, that’s for sure. Everett’s interview with Jayson Werth after Monday’s game was awkward and amateurish. Maybe Everett will get better as the season goes along but my first impression of him was not favorable.

The basic game broadcast remains the same with Howie and Josh on the call. They’re great. The signal is fine from where I listen. Unfortunately though, you can’t go pre or post with Everett – at least until he gets some footing. And you can’t listen to WOR for anything else really.

That’s part of what made the Mets on WFAN so great. You could turn on the radio on gameday and leave it on all day and night. Francesa would come on after the afternoon games and Somers after the night games. Beningo and Roberts are both Met fans and tilted that way on their show at midday.

I guess now you just turn the dial to get the game and then go back to the FAN after it’s over. Only problem with that now is you have 162 Yankee games clogging up the program schedule on WFAN.

-Tiger’s announcement that he’ll miss the Masters after playing in golf’s greatest tournament 19 consecutive years prompts the question whether he’ll win another major. At 38 years old, I believe Tiger will take down another major or two. But how do you explain his rapid physical deterioration when so many golfing greats before him managed to play deep into their 40’s without hitting the shelf? Is it Tiger’s bodybuilder physique – or his swing that’s been his undoing? The outspoken Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee told Francesa Tuesday it’s both. Chamblee says Tiger’s preparation and training away from the golf course unnecessarily emphasized weightlifting and likely contributed to some of his physical problems. Most regrettable says Chamblee is that the upper body bulk (and current fragility) gained from Tiger’s chosen training regimen was motivated by vanity rather than some benefit to his game.

The new radio home of the New York Mets is a downgrade.
