I’m worried about Wednesday’s game four of the NLCS.

I’m not sweating the outcome like my friends and family who think this is finally the year for the Cubbies.

What concerns me is that the home plate umpire assignment rotates to Angel Hernandez in game four. With shadows creeping into the space between plate and mound, Hernandez will decide pitches from Lackey and most likely Urias.

Having seen Hernandez butcher a lot of games involving the Mets over the years, I’m surprised he’s allowed to work such a huge series.

Hernandez often does not see the plainly obvious when working the bases. His view of the strike zone is ok but he can’t seem to make it through a whole game without some kind of problem. Worse, he’s prone to escalate both the verbal and non-verbal gesture aspects of interactions with players, coaches and managers after a questionable call.

The umpiring has been pretty good in this series so far. Eric Cooper blew the call on Russell at first base in game one but replay quickly remedied that blunder.

Hernandez has yet to play any kind of role through the first two games but he’s at first base on Tuesday night and then calls balls and strikes on Wednesday.

Here’s hoping he doesn’t get in the way of what’s been a compelling best-of-seven so far.
